The Reading to Learn Lessons are designed around key Information Literacy Areas, helping students develop essential skills in locating, summarizing, evaluating, and presenting information.
Several sessions are dedicated to promoting reading, incorporating engaging activities such as scavenger hunts and quiz competitions to captivate students' interest. Our goal is to equip students with the skills and abilities necessary to become self-directed learners.
The Reading to Learn Working Group collaborates with various subject departments and committees to organize engaging activities and promote a culture of reading. Reading is seamlessly integrated into our formal curriculum, enhancing students' learning experiences. We arrange library visits during lesson time, ensuring students are introduced to a wide range of resources available for their school assignments and projects.
The Reading to Learn Working Group organizes the Reading Sharing Competition for S.1 to S.3 students, providing them with a platform to share their reading journeys with their peers. Students are encouraged to be creative and innovative in their presentations, utilizing technology and honing their public speaking skills to showcase the books they have found interesting.
Over the years, we have witnessed many outstanding presentations that have enriched the reading experiences of both students and teachers alike.
To further enhance students' reading abilities and raise awareness of social issues, we organize News Presentation Competitions. In this competition, students read a piece of news and present it as if they were news anchors.
Participants are encouraged to leverage technology by incorporating jingles and creating visual aids for their presentations. Their creativity is also showcased through short dramas that depict interviews related to the news reports.
This engaging format not only develops their presentation skills but also deepens their understanding of current events.
The Reading Circle brings together avid readers to share their literary journeys. During these sessions, students present the books they have read—whether in Chinese or English, printed or digital formats. Audience members are encouraged to engage by asking questions, fostering a lively discussion. We are delighted by the enthusiasm shown in previous Reading Circle sessions and look forward to welcoming more HLCians to join this enriching experience and immerse themselves in the world of reading.
HLC Library collaborates with local bookstore outlets to organize a Book Fair on our school premises. During this event, students have the opportunity to purchase books and recommend titles for the library to acquire.
Additionally, students and teachers can explore and select books together, fostering a positive reading atmosphere within our College.
To cultivate team spirit and develop leadership skills among our Library Prefects, we organize visits to various library services. These excursions provide students with insights into the different sections of a public library, enhancing their understanding of library operations.
During these visits, students learn how to locate information online and navigate public databases. They even have the opportunity to engage in the conservation of historical documents. By exploring different branches of Hong Kong Public Library, our Library Prefects gain valuable knowledge and experience that prepares them to better serve patrons at the HLC Library.
Our library regularly hosts themed book displays, featuring a rotating selection of books on various topics and by diverse authors. This initiative allows patrons to discover new and engaging titles, enriching students' reading experiences.
The Reading Excellence Award Programme is designed to encourage students to actively participate in reading activities. This initiative features three distinct levels of recognition:
- Learner: Celebrating early readers who are beginning their literacy journey.
- Achiever: For students who demonstrate consistent engagement in reading activities.
- Scholar: Recognizing readers who exhibit exceptionally active participation in reading activities.
Additionally, we honor classes that are particularly active in reading. This programme aims to foster a love for reading.
