HKDSE Curriculum

In the senior forms, students take core subjects including English, Chinese, Mathematics, and Citizenship and Social Development, along with three electives selected from a broad range of options leading to the Hong Kong Diploma of Secondary Education (HKDSE). To ensure a well-rounded education, all senior students are required to complete a minimum of physical education, music, media education, and visual arts.

They also have the option to pursue extended math modules (M1 – Calculus & Statistics or M2 – Algebra & Calculus).

Curriculum Breakdown :

The senior secondary curriculum consists of three major components:

  • Core Subjects: Mandatory subjects include English Language, Chinese Language, Mathematics (core only or core + extended modules), Citizenship and Social Development.

  • Electives: Students may choose a maximum of three subjects from seven key learning areas:

    International Curriculum

HLC also offers an International A-Level (IAL), which is equivalent to the GCE, alongside the HKDSE, providing students with an opportunity to pursue an alternative curriculum based on their skills and proficiencies. Starting in S.4, students can participate in an integrated curriculum that combines HKDSE and IGCSE content as a bridge to IAL. In S.5 and S.6, they progress to Pearson Edexcel International Advanced Levels (IAL), with options to take A/AS-level examinations in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics—broadening their global university opportunities.

This dual-curriculum approach offers flexibility and prepares students for a range of academic and career goals. Although the majority of HLC students will follow the DSE curriculum in their senior NSS years, the IAL serves as a practical alternative, providing a more suitable pathway for certain students.
