A World of Viruses
First it was H5N1, the so-called bird flu; and now it’s H1N1, recently called the swine flu. I am sure there will be more HxNx strains of viruses making headline stories. The fact is: we are living in a world of viruses. If we don’t handle the crisis well, we may soon find ourselves living in “a world ruled by viruses”. In school we are on hyper alert, doing everything possible to keep students safe from these health threats.
But these microscopic viruses are not the only threat to our young people. Our students are constantly exposed to spiritual and intellectual viruses every day. In books they read, TV programmes they watch and web pages they search, there are millions and millions of viruses which poison the mind and spirit of our young—pornographic images, obscenity, slandering and anti-social ideas.
While health officials emphasize that the best defense against viruses is to keep our bodies strong and healthy, the same philosophy applies to educating our children in the fight against the other kind of viruses. To teach students proper values and positive attitude is the best immunization to keep them from pornography, drugs and crimes.
HLC is committed to doing just that.
