JA Job shadowing program

JA Job Shadowing is an academically motivating educational activity dedicated to giving students an up-close look at the world of work. On the Job Shadow Day, students go into a Host Company to “shadow” a mentor as he or she goes through a normal day on the job. This gives students a chance to see how the skills learned in school relate to the workplace. With relevant preparation and reinforcement activities led by Mr. Ho around the Job Shadow Day, it supports students to get the most out of their Job Shadow Day experience.

At the very beginning, I think the activity must be quite boring as everyone say office guys are doing the same thing throughout the day.
While in the The Land Registry Hong Kong, it was quite different from what people said. I did not see anyone feel bored there, and me too!
I quite love the lunch section, not because I can rest, but enjoying chatting with the officers there.
While working, I've got a question that why Chinese need to use English, why don't we use Chinese and it must convince everyone, even the customer (the public).
What I've learnt most is to be careful in checking, calculating. What ever you do, you need to be so care.
I love the job shadowing activities. But I think I could work for more than one day, in order to get more experience from there. Anyway, it was really a great experience.

I have joined the job shadowing on 18th May 2011 in the Land Registry. Land Registry is a trading fund department providing land registration services. I am honored to have a working experience in this government department. In this programme, I could try using the IRIS (the Integrated Registration Information System), which is the unique system for the Land Registry. Numerous data can be inputted with the aid of the IRIS. I could also have the opportunity to explore the working environment of a government department. I think this experience is valuable for me to know more about this department and the actual working situation.

I have had a remarkable experience during that day.
First of all, I’m thankful of having the opportunity to join the Job Shadowing (JS).
Having been to the Land Registry, I had a taste of ‘working’ in an office, I think it is quite a precious experience for me to reflect what I will be doing in the future. I particularly find that English (or Language skill) is of vital importance for daily work in the department. For instance, my mentor Leo told me that often he needs to answer phone calls from solicitor’s firm and the questions sometimes he could hardly answer therefore language and communication skills are important.

On the day of job shadowing, Houston and I worked as a group in the customer services department in the Land Registry Hong Kong. Our mentor talked about her daily work and the responsibility of the department. After that, she let us try to input the data collected from comment cards and reply emails from customers.
While we were working on the paper work, we soon found that we don’t know how to complete the tasks. I spotted that it is always better to seek help from mentor instead of trying to solve the problems by ourselves as we are not familiar with the work process and pattern of the department. Seek help can let us understand the work more, solve problems by ourselves just caused mistakes.

I am delighted to have such an opportunity to work in the Land Registry for one day. It is a short but fruitful experience.
Firstly, I truly understood the interdependence between different departments within a company. While registering a deed by computer. It’s not hard but you need to be utterly careful as there’re bunches of long codes you need to enter,  so we may easily commit mistakes. If it happened, the follow-up department would mail the registered document to the wrong recipient.
Secondly, this is really a good chance for us to identify if you like certain kind of work. Thus I don't have to walk a long way till I know my ideal career in the future.
Finally, many thanks to the teachers for arranging this meaningful activity for us.
