Ch 1 Introducing science

1.1 What is science

  1. Develop interest in science
  2. Understand the scope of science and the work of scientists
  3. Realize the limitations of science

1.2 Working in the science laboratory

  1. Understand safety rules in the laboratory
  2. Be able to take appropriate action in case of emergency in laboratory

1.3 Using science apparatus

  1. Develop skills in the safe handling of chemicals, apparatus and equipments
  2. Be able to draw sectional diagrams of apparatus
  3. Be able to use simple instruments to make accurate measurements
  4. Be able to observe, record and present experimental results

1.4 Working like a scientists

  1. Be able to identify variables involved in an investigation
  2. Be able to design and carry out a simple scientific investigation

 

Ch 2 Looking at living things

2.1 Living things

  1. Realize the characteristics of living things
  2. Identify characteristics of plants and animals

2.2 Observing an animal

  1. Develop skills of careful observation

2.3 Wide variety of living things

  1. Understand the diversity of living things
  2. Identify variations within the same kind of living thing

2.4 Sorting things into groups

  1. Be able to classify major groups of animals and plants
  2. Be able to classify living things by using a simple key

2.5 Endangered species

  1. Understand the impact of human activities on environment and wild life
  2. Realize inter-dependence between living things
  3. Be able to suggest the ways of conservation

 

Ch 3 Cells and human reproduction

3.1 The basic units of living things

  1. Understand cells are the basic unit of life
  2. Acquire skills in using microscope and preparing temporary mounts
  3. Learn the calculation of magnification of a microscope
  4. Identify the basic structures of plant cells and animal cells
  5. Under cell division and cell growth

3.2 Reproduction

  1. Understand differences between asexual and sexual reproduction
  2. Identify structures and functions of male and female reproduction structures and sex cells

3.3 The beginning of a new life

  1. Understand different stages of pregnancy
  2. Point out importance of parental care
  3. Acquire basic knowledge of heredity

3.4 Puberty

  1. Realize the changes at puberty and sexual characteristics of the two sexes
  2. Clarify myths of puberty

3.5 Pregnancy

  1. Acquire the knowledge of pregnancy
  2. Acquire the knowledge of family planning
  3. Recognize the risks associated with abortion

3.6 Sexually transmitted diseases

  1. Acquire some knowledge about sexually transmitted diseases
  2. Develop positive attitudes towards AIDS patients

3.7 A responsible attitude towards sex

  1. Develop positive attitude towards sex

 

Ch 4 Energy

4.1 Forms of energy

  1. Identify different forms of energy in daily life

4.2 Energy conversion

  1. Understand energy could be interchange into different forms
  2. Be familiar with some energy converters
  3. Be aware the need to control energy change

4.3 Study of fuels

  1. Identify common fuels
  2. Be able to state properties of good fuels
  3. Be aware safety issues when using fuels

4.4 Electrical energy

  1. Understand energy conversion at different stages production of electricity
  2. Realize the pollution problems arising from the generation of electricity

4.5 Energy sources

  1. Recognize the need of energy conservation

 

Ch 5 Water

5.1 Water purification

  1. Point out impurities in water from natural sources
  2. Introduce methods of water purifications including filtration and distillation

5.2 Further treatment of water

  1. Point out further treatment of water such as chlorination, ozone and U.V. could remove microbes in water

5.3 The water cycle

  1. Be able to explain the process of the water cycle in terms of changes in state of water
  2. Be able to identify factors affecting the rate of evaporation

5.4 Water conservation and pollution

  1. Realize the need of water conservation
  2. Be able to tell the ways to control water pollution in Hong Kong

5.5 Dissolving

  1. Understand the meaning of solute, solvent, solution and saturated solution
  2. Identify the factors affecting the rate of dissolving

5.6 Growing crystals

  1. Investigate crystals formed under different conditions

5.7 Solvents other than water

  1. Realize there are solvents other than water
  2. Point out safety precautions when using organic solvents

 

Ch 6 Matter as particles

6.1 Matter

  1. Point out matters exist in three states: solid, liquid and gas
  2. Understand substance can change from one state as the temperature changes

6.2 The particle theory

  1. Be able to infer that all substance are made up of particles; particles are constantly moving; space between particles

6.3 Particle models

  1. Be able to infer the space between particles are different in matter
  2. Point out atom is the smallest unit of matter

6.4 Gas pressure

  1. Be able to explain gas pressure by using particle theory
  2. Be able to infer factors that affect gas sure
  3. Explore application of gas pressure in daily life

6.5 Density

  1. Be able to find the density from experiment

6.6 Thermal expansion and contraction

  1. Be able to explain thermal expansion and contraction by using particle theory
  2. Explore application of thermal expansion and contraction in daily life
